What is ZIP archive?

ZIP is the most widely supported archive format; Windows, macOS, Linux and phones open it without extra software.

When someone cannot open a RAR, 7z or tar.gz file, converting it to ZIP is the easiest fix: every computer and phone can open ZIP without installing anything.

File extensions: .zipMIME types: application/zip

Advantages

  • Opens on every system out of the box
  • Each file is compressed separately, so single files can be extracted fast
  • Good for email attachments and downloads

Disadvantages

  • Weaker compression than 7z or tar.xz
  • Unix file permissions are often lost
  • Legacy ZIP encryption is weak

Typical uses

  • Sending several files at once
  • Downloads and backups
  • Office files and apps are ZIPs inside

Compatibility

Built into Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, Linux file managers, Android and iOS Files.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with local code. Your files never leave your device, and there is no upload.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no limit on our side, but your browser memory is. Images work for very large files; for videos, files above a few hundred megabytes can fail on devices with little memory.

Will the quality suffer?

That depends on the target format and settings. Use the quality option to balance size and detail; lossless targets keep everything the source contained.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Fast hardware paths are used where available, with a compatible fallback otherwise.
